Professional Sports in the Tampa area

St. Petersburg / Tampa area of Florida is home to some of the best weather in the United States. With daily sunshine, its no wonder why West Florida is home to professional teams.

Professional Sports in Tampa Bay

For starters, downtown's Tropicana Field is home to the Major League Baseball team; Tampa Bay Rays of the American League. The team started out named as the "Tampa Bay Devil Rays" in 1998 but Stuart Sternberg following the 2007 season dropped the word "Devil" from the name to just "Tampa Bay Rays".

In 2008 the "Rays" won their first AL East Championship ultimately losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the National Football League is a franchise based in Tampa. Currently in the National Football Conference (NFC), the Bucs originally joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team along with the Seattle Seahawks.

The first 2 seasons were quite rough, with the Bucs losing 26 straight games in a row. In 2002, the Bucs won Super Bowl XXXVII but have not yet returned to their glory. The 2014 season looks to be promising with the signing of free agents and a good core of returning players.

The Tampa Bay Lighting are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). In the 2003-04 season, the "Bolts" as they are commonly referred to, won the Stanley Cup, the leagues most prestigious award.

The 2013-14 season brought the departure of local fan favorite, Martin St. Louis to the New York Rangers. Currently the Lighting are in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with an overall record of 37-24-7.

St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation

"It Starts In Parks"

There are 137 parks on approximately 2,300 acres of public land is dedicated to parks and recreation including a seven mile preserved waterfront, a botancial garden, a palm arboretum, skate parks, nature preserves, beaches and the 47-mile Pinellas Trail.

Waterfront parks emerged one hundred years ago with the preservation of our waterfront by our forefathers, William Straub, Peter Demens and Perry Snell. They wanted every resident and visitor to have access to the waterfront. In the 1950’s the first recreation center began with a lawn bowling and shuffleboard club at Mirror Lake. St. Petersburg became known for its many beautiful parks and recreation facilities.

As St. Petersburg grows, so do the opportunities for activity in all its neighborhoods. The legacy continues today with 17 recreation facilities, 9 swimming pools, over 150 parks, over 70 athletic fields, with programming for all ages and abilities.

St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation has a long standing tradition of providing residents and visitors with quality of life amenities.

The bridge is lighted at night, so anglers can see to rig a line, bait the hook, and get a good look at their catch. The light also attracts many species of fish after sundown. Common catches include snook, tarpon, grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper, pompano, and many more. Warhol Exhibit at, "The Dali" Museum

January 18 - April 27, 2014
See what happens when two of the most influential artists of the 20th century meet.

About the Exhibit

"Warhol: Art. Fame. Mortality." explores how Andy Warhol learned from Dalí's public visibility and was equally attuned to the images derived from mass culture. The exhibit considers Warhol's seldom discussed engagement with other artists through his own painting, how he constructed an approach to the image in terms of celebrity and fame, and finally his treatment of painting and image as it pertains to human mortality.

Dalí and Warhol

"Warhol and Dalí lived in New York City at the same time. The photos of the two of them suggest a certain reticence. Perhaps they knew the how much alike they were. Artistically they are of the same species - both radical. If Dalí is radical in the way he delivered his subject of the changeable self through many media - painting, sculpture, film, and language - Warhol is radical in allowing media to provide his subject - faces from the tabloids and glossy magazines, products from the catalog of the American consumer. If Dalí used popular media to present his vision of the dream world, Warhol used popular media as the subject of his art. Warhol was one of the American artists most marked by the legacy and model of Salvador Dalí." - Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director of The Dali
