Professional Sports in the Tampa area

St. Petersburg / Tampa area of Florida is home to some of the best weather in the United States. With daily sunshine, its no wonder why West Florida is home to professional teams.

Professional Sports in Tampa Bay

For starters, downtown's Tropicana Field is home to the Major League Baseball team; Tampa Bay Rays of the American League. The team started out named as the "Tampa Bay Devil Rays" in 1998 but Stuart Sternberg following the 2007 season dropped the word "Devil" from the name to just "Tampa Bay Rays".

In 2008 the "Rays" won their first AL East Championship ultimately losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the National Football League is a franchise based in Tampa. Currently in the National Football Conference (NFC), the Bucs originally joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team along with the Seattle Seahawks.

The first 2 seasons were quite rough, with the Bucs losing 26 straight games in a row. In 2002, the Bucs won Super Bowl XXXVII but have not yet returned to their glory. The 2014 season looks to be promising with the signing of free agents and a good core of returning players.

The Tampa Bay Lighting are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). In the 2003-04 season, the "Bolts" as they are commonly referred to, won the Stanley Cup, the leagues most prestigious award.

The 2013-14 season brought the departure of local fan favorite, Martin St. Louis to the New York Rangers. Currently the Lighting are in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with an overall record of 37-24-7.
