The History of Snell Isle
C. Perry Snell (1869-1942) was a renowned Kentucky druggist who moved to the St. Petersburg, FL. area in the year 1900.
Throughout the early part of the 20th century, Mr. Snell began purchasing an array of land properties and started to develop these lands into upscale residential neighborhoods, public parks, and commercial buildings.
As a pioneer in the creation of the Snell Isle neighborhood in the 1920's, C. Perry Snell had a daunting task to develop this once muddy mangrove island into a 275 acre parcel of livable real estate. At that time, Snell Isle had only 39 of its 275 acres above the high tide line. Still, C. Perry Snell was able to sell over 7 million dollars worth of lots on Snell Isle.
It was the year 1926 and C. Perry Snell opened up one of the most luxurious resorts in the world - The Renaissance Vinoy Golf Club and Resort. This architectural masterpiece is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
